Speak to any biker who’s toured Europe and they’ll tell you the reward for crossing the Swiss border is either a €1,000 fine or access to the finest roads on the continent. Both are true but with a little care you can certainly avoid the former. The three pass loop of Furka, Grimsel & Susten is easily done in a day with included playtime. If passing through Switzerland, it’s best done from Ticino in the south when heading north.
On my first trip to Europe with four friends, we managed to ride the St. Gotthard pass before the Holy Trinity while making time for a late lunch at the Ace Cafe in Luzern. This was all before heading to our hotel in the Black Forest later that evening. My video below is edited purely from footage filmed that day when we all fell in love with Switzerland.
During the height of the riding season, these roads will be popular with bikers and the Polizei alike. Strict observance of speed limits in towns and villages is essential. We call it “Riding Swiss”, as all the local bikers who despite dragging knee up and down several thousand feet will ride through any town at a dead crawl.
Which one is the best ‘riding road’?
Susten traveling from west to east hands down! It’s a tight technical road that will keep you entertained all day.
Where can I get the best photos?
The valley connecting the Grimsel and Furka passes was created for perfect Instagram snaps. And of course there’s the famous James Bond strasse for 007 fans.
